Cell: long-term construction is close to completion
At the ISSCC (International Solid State Circuits Conference), which began yesterday, IBM, Sony, SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) and Toshiba squeezed out another piece of information about the Cell processor, which has been under development since 2021.
As a reminder, four years will soon pass since the start of the development of the Cell processor designed for next-generation gaming consoles – IBM, Sony and Toshiba began working on it in March 2021. Such a long development period is explained by the extraordinary ambitions of the companies – to create a processor that works 10 times faster than modern processors in a PC.
So, according to the data presented at the ISSCC, the Cell will be built on the basis of the IBM Power PC architecture, will contain several cores and will operate at a clock frequency of more than 4 GHz (approx. perev.- it is not clear only about what clock frequency we are talking about – about the real clock frequency, which, frankly speaking, is hard to believe, or about the clock frequency at which a single-core processor with similar performance would work).
Manufactured in compliance with the 90nm process technology using SOI (silicon-on-insulator) technology on low-k dielectrics, the Cell prototype has an area of 221 sq. mm, contains 234 million. transistors. The key element of the architecture is SPE (Synergistic Processor Element), which is, in fact, an analogue of SIMD in Intel processors, however, designed to work with multiple cores. SPE is capable of working with two instruction pipelines, sending two instructions per clock to each of up to seven logical processors. Thanks to its multicore, the Cell is said to be capable of supporting multiple operating systems simultaneously – Linux, embedded real-time operating systems, and “guest” operating systems for dedicated applications.
Cell prototypes are expected to begin production later this year, first at IBM’s East Fishkill plant, then at Sony’s Nagasaki plant.
