IBM Introduces Low-End Power5 Servers for Linux

Last September IBM introduced OpenPower 720, a 4-way server based on Power5 64-bit RISC processor optimized for Linux. This is the youngest family of IBM servers based on its own processor, running Linux. Sales of 720 were quite successful, at the moment about 250 applications have been ported for it, 900 are available in total, and IBM decided to introduce a younger brother, OpenPower 710. This is a 2 U rackmount server with one or two processors clocked at 1.5 GHz or 1.65 GHz. It will be available from February 18 at prices from $ 3500. for a single-processor model and from $ 4000. for a dual-processor, while prices for the 720 start at $ 5,000.

Thus, IBM brings its RISC architecture in close connection with Linux (supported by Red Hat and Novell SUSE) to the lower price segment of the market in its understanding. The 710 series is positioned for financial and government institutions, and mainly for web applications and use as components for building clusters (nodes). As an additional cost-effectiveness factor, it is pointed out that often licenses for server software are purchased per processor, not per platform, and in conditions of sufficient computing power, fewer processors in this context are preferable.

Power5 processors, among many other technologies, natively supports multithreading, and allows you to organize several (up to 10) virtual machines on one server. Especially such solutions are positioned for web applications. Virtualization software is sold separately and costs another $ 1,500.
