We have repeatedly touched on the topic of three-dimensional, or non-planar, designs of semiconductor devices (for example, FinFET) in our news, which, according to theoretical predictions, should contribute to improving the speed and power consumption of microcircuits. However, the first practical studies carried out in the past year indicate that such innovations may be inexpedient for economic and technical reasons – instead of creating microcircuits from a large number of non-planar fragments, they can be done by “gluing” flat chips.

Let’s start with not the most pleasant news. In May, Norwegian research firm Opticom said it would likely be forced to end its collaboration with Intel on multilayer plastic memory. As follows from the interim data of the Swedish division of Opticom, Thin Film Electronics, technical issues regarding the possibility of producing plastic memory have not been resolved, as a result of which Opticom will be forced to terminate cooperation with Intel.

Meanwhile, Matrix Semiconductor reported on the successful implementation of 512-Mbit programmable ROM in an eight-layer chip, which has been released since November this year at 0.15 microns.

However, the most interesting results were achieved by Tezzaron Semiconductor, which “glued” the microcontroller chip (using FaStack technology) with SRAM RAM. By the end of this year, Tezzaron announced the development of six prototypes that, it says, will achieve 90% less power consumption (due to shorter interconnect lengths) than comparable 2D chips.

Tezzaron technology is also interesting because, unlike Samsung, which also “glues” its flash memory into MCP-chips (MCP – Multi-Chip Package), its approach allows you to combine chips made according to different technological processes and even from different materials. This can be very useful for wireless module manufacturers looking for ways to simplify production.
