Scottish scientists have developed a way to deliver genes into a cell using a laser
A team of scientists from the University of St. Andrew, located in the city of the same name in Scotland, as part of an interdisciplinary government project, has developed a new way of introducing genes into a cell. Physicists, physicians and biologists took part in the work.
The new method is based on the use of a low-power violet laser and is characterized by high accuracy, versatility and harmlessness to the target cell. Its area of application is primarily genetic therapy, delivery of anticancer drugs and in-depth study of intracellular processes, primarily neurodegenerative. These are the areas where the method was initially positioned, however, in the process of trial use, scientists came to the conclusion that it is so universal that its potential is difficult to even imagine.
So how does it all happen. The cell is placed under a microscope and in its shell, irradiating for a fraction of a second with a laser, a microscopic hole is made through which the gene material is injected into the protoplasm. The accuracy of the method is a single target cell, which was previously unattainable. Also, for the first time, the entire process can be monitored with a simple microscope.
After the operation, the hole in the membrane is quickly tightened, and the inserted gene is integrated into metabolic processes, which was proven by the introduction of a gene that produces a fluorescent protein, which was previously not characteristic of this cell. The same method was used to confirm the inheritance of the introduced material to daughter cells after division.
How much the horizons of biology and practical medicine will expand after the introduction of this operation into practice – time will tell.
