AMD releases OPMA specs
Open Platform Management Architecture (OPMA) technical specifications are now available for download on AMD’s website as a voluminous PDF.
These specifications are intended for hardware and software developers to build and manage servers based on AMD processors, and provide a single, standardized interface based on an open, non-licensed standard.
OPMA-compliant connector provides interface to BMC (baseboard management controller), network interface, BIOS, processors and any sensors and control elements of the motherboard and chassis. The standard interface allows developers of final solutions to reduce the time and cost of developing their systems and make them compatible within the platform. So far, only proprietary solutions were available for the AMD platform.
The new standard makes it possible to develop compatible expansion cards, which were not slow to take advantage of the developers of KVM, Raritan and its OEM division in Germany Peppercon AG. They worked closely with AMD to develop the OPMA specifications, and therefore, on the day of their publication, they presented the first product compatible with them.
This is KVM-over-IP (Console Network Switch) KIM 2.0, made in the form of a small expansion card and providing a server management service over the network (not necessarily local) before the operating system boots (and after, of course).
The company is a leading supplier in this market sector and intends to offer new solutions for the OPMA standard in the future.
Server board manufacturer Tyan also supported the new standard, citing the open standard for server administration as one of the most anticipated innovations in the industry.
Intel is doing a little differently. Despite the fact that such standards have long been successfully implemented, they are proprietary and, most likely, are licensed for a fee. These user-friendly server management tools are fully embedded in the Intel platform, and major partners such as HP are making their server management tools based on Intel chipsets and processors. However, it is HP OpenView that is fully compatible with Intel Server Management, but there are no compatible developments from Intel’s minority partners on the market.
In the south bridges of the new chipsets for desktops, it is planned to introduce (in the corporate version) the same remote control tools, but so far it is clearly stated that they will be available only in motherboards manufactured by Intel itself.
It is difficult to say how the new AMD initiative will affect the balance of power in the market, we are waiting for products with its support, but the announcement of OPMA right on the eve of the IDF opening does not seem accidental at all.
