Iwill – mastering SFF systems on the example of ZMAXdp

Taiwanese manufacturer Iwill will soon begin mass production of SFF (small form factor) systems based on two AMD Opteron processors starting next week, according to the company.

The novelty will be called ZMAXdp. The project, the work on which was announced earlier this year, was slightly suspended due to the search for a solution for the optimal placement of all devices of the future computer in such a small space, which is usually provided by SFF systems. It was necessary to work out the most rational way to compactly place two Opteron processors, their bulky and voluminous cooling systems, not to mention the fact that there was still space for a hard disk, a DVD / CD-ROM drive, a floppy drive, a card reader, a place for a PCI card. and AGP video adapter. And all this, of course, should not only be elegantly accommodated, but also should have an acceptable temperature regime during its (sometimes continuous) operation.

Prototypes have already been demonstrated, but as you know, there is a big chasm between the test and future production copies. These are all sorts of tweaks, improvements of a different plan, such as improvements and fixes to the BIOS?a, improve the temperature. The ZMAXdp uses two temperature-controlled fans on the rear panel that drive air to draw heat away from the motherboard and heat pipes connecting the heatsinks of both processors. All heated air is emitted by a 300W cooler?Nogo PSU.

During development, the prototype underwent multiple design changes, as a result of which the cooling system turned out to be at a high level and is able to cope with the Opteron 250, and a modern powerful and full-size video card can be installed in the AGP slot!

A ZMAXdp system consisting of just a set: a motherboard, a cooling system and a case will cost approximately $ 500 to $ 700… The redesign costs were high, the project was somewhat delayed, so Iwill does not expect large demand and large sales volumes in the near future.
