PEFC: Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Cell Phones
As we have already noted, the most popular fuel for miniature fuel cells is methanol. However, the low concentration of methanol solution, which makes it possible to carry out the catalytic oxidative reaction at a relatively low temperature, does not allow us to hope for a long battery life. Therefore, the Japanese corporation NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone), following Canon, offers an alternative – a polymer-electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), which uses hydrogen as a working substance. The fuel cell has dimensions of 42x80x13 mm and a weight of 104 g, which makes it possible to integrate it into cell phones or at least use them as portable chargers.
The PEFC prototype demonstrated by NTT uses body-centered-cubic type hydrogen-storage alloy to store hydrogen. The company claims that the prototype provides a standby time of up to 9 hours and can be used in any portable device that requires high power consumption – video cameras, laptops, etc. P.
