Global memory market: the spot market goes into hibernation

Contract prices are known,
market participants in the spot market have decided on a strategy by the end of the year
and the situation became more or less certain. Assessing the situation by region, it is worth
note that the maximum decrease in activity was noted in Hong Kong: due to the traditional
winter festival working day working day for most traders ends
earlier than usual, which leads to a decrease in activity on exchanges, respectively
due to the low number of concluded deals, prices are falling. Reviewers estimate
the market now sells almost the last batches of some names of modules
– as part of the fulfillment of orders from China. Average spot price of tokens, 256
Mbit (32×8) of DDR266 / 333/400 SDRAM components decreased by
0.16 / 0.15 / 0.07% – up to 3.65 / 3.81 and 4.05 dollars, respectively. Of more or less
interesting events in the sector, it is worth noting the fact of the beginning of the publication of prices for modules
DDR2 SDRAM Asian Exchanges. It is possible that the reduction in prices contributes to and
the fact that some traders who held memory stocks before updating the contract
prices, decided to get rid of them and partially “released” them to the spot market. Price
DDR400 SDRAM components from major manufacturers depending on the region varies
within 4.04-4.23 dollars, untested microcircuits – within 3.57-3.62

Price 256 MB DDR2 533 SDRAM DIMM with 32×64 organization (256 MB components,
32×8) is about $ 50, 512MB DDR2 533 SDRAM DIMM with organization
64×64 (512 Mbit 64×8 components) – $ 88, 1 GB DDR2 533 SDRAM DIMM
with organization 128×64 (components – 512 Mbit, 64×8) – 180 dollars.

Low Density SDR SDRAM ICs Virtually Do Not Attract Traders,
over the past couple of days, the number of requests for components of this type can be that
called, count on fingers.

It looks like only the NAND flash sector remains the hottest – but not because of the number of
deals made, but only against the background of low activity in other sectors.
Over the past 24 hours, 1 and 2 Gbit memory components of this type have been delivered to the market.
Remarkable enough, these items are selling out fast
pace due to limited supplies, which cannot be said about 4 and 8 Gbit components.

Let’s return, however, to the DDR SDRAM market. DRAMeXchange analysts who noted that
the situation over the past week was paradoxical (prices were
stable and even grew with a decrease in sales), it is also believed that with
taking into account the seasonal decline in demand, the price of memory in the near future: due to low
demand in both spot and contract markets, partial sales of stocks
to the spot market by traders, and a number of other factors.

This point of view is quite understandable and is closest to the truth: firstly,
the demand of PC OEMs for memory in December was lower than in November, which
reflected in the decline in contract prices. A 10% increase was recorded in November
total production of microcircuits compared to October, in December it is possible
further growth. Under such conditions, the price should have started to decline earlier,
but in reality, in the first half of December, prices rose.

Secondly, according to DRAMeXchange, in the first week of December the most popular
the commodity was memory chips from major manufacturers, during the second week
sales decreased, and, interestingly, in the absence of excessively high demand,
microcircuits from leading manufacturers were practically absent on the market; but at
this was the delivery of untested microcircuits to the spot market.
That is, both supply and demand were in balance, but activity
both selling and buying sides remained low.

Third, a short-term rise in prices for SDR SDRAM (reflected in production volumes
and sales of DDR SDRAM) ceased, manufacturers first stopped increasing
prices for these products, and then began to reduce output – since the demand for
consumer electronics was below the forecast.
