Bell Labs: giving 100 Gbps over copper conductors!
Bell Labs and FCI have demonstrated the ability to transmit data over electrical conductors at speeds of up to 25 Gb / s and claims to be able to create a network switch with an internal bandwidth of 100 Gb / s – a value previously considered unattainable for electrical signals, according to the source.
Such a high throughput has become possible due to the use of double binary signal coding technology – three signal levels are used to transmit a binary code. This technology was first presented at the IEEE Microwave Communications Symposium last June. It is argued that double binary coding allows you to use the natural processes of signal distortion for good, instead of fighting them.
In addition to the new technology for transmitting binary code, the developers used FCI AirMax VS waveguides, which are very simple technologically (air is used as a dielectric, and despite the fact that these waveguides do not require a metal shield, they create quite small interference and do not lead to strong reflection signal).
It is reported that 25 Gbps throughput for electrical signals has been achieved in a waveguide up to 24 inches (61 cm) in length.
