Sun prepares Galaxy, IBM introduces new eServer p5

According to the source, the announcement of new Sun Microsystems servers based on Opteron processors is expected in the near future. Codenamed Galaxy, the new servers are designed to use AMD’s upcoming dual-core processors.

Galaxy is expected to support up to eight processors and will be positioned to replace the Sun Fire v20z and v40z. New items will work under Linux, Solaris or Windows OS.

Meanwhile, Sun competitor IBM unveiled its new entry-level eServer p5 510 server last week. Based on up to two 64-bit POWER5 processors, base servers will cost up to $ 4,000 and target the small and medium business (SMB) sector. New products from IBM will also run Linux or AIX 5L version 5.2 and 5.3, will support IBM Virtualization Engine and Micro-Partitioning technologies.
