Elpida and Ovonyx join forces to create phase change memory
licenses production technology from Ovonyx
nonvolatile memory based on phase transition of states. Expected that
memory created using the new technology will be able to replace the current type – DRAM.
This license agreement is subject to the full cooperation of Ovonyx
on work on a new type of memory.
It should be noted that Elpida is not the first company,
licensing this technology from Ovonyx. Intel had already done this before her and
STMicroelectronics. They both tried to use a reversible phase process
transition of states from the amorphous to the crystalline state of the antimony alloy and
Germany. The corresponding agreement on the part of Intel was concluded with Ovonyx
back in February 2000, and STMicroelectronics did it with two more
months earlier. However, none of the companies have yet achieved their desired
result – attempts to create 4 Mbit memory chips (ovonic unified memory)
have not been successful for Intel.
Elpida plans to use phase-shift technology
