Let us briefly recall that by now there are two conflicting opinions on how to use the frequency range licensed for UWB. A number of companies, led by Freescale (a subsidiary of Motorola), advocate the use of the entire frequency band, hence the name of their technology – DS (Direct Sequence) -UWB. The majority, led by Intel, prefers the option of dividing the frequency band into 528 MHz sub-bands, which allows slightly increasing the communication range (up to 10 m), at the expense of bandwidth (the theoretical maximum is 480 Mbps versus 1 Gbps in DS- UWB). Despite the fact that the discussion of both options in the IEEE lasts almost a year, a compromise has not been reached, moreover, observers believe that the dispute will go to the “bitter end”, that is, until one of the technologies is standardized.

After the adoption of the physical layer and MAC specifications, the first products based on MBOA-UWB can be expected to appear in 2021. In this case, the so far shaky advantage of DS-UWB (Motorola has already begun shipping trial copies of its solutions) may well become real, although there is information about plans to release trial copies of MBOA-UWB chips (in particular, Staccato) next year.
