Realtek on wireless technologies: about ourselves and the future

As we already mentioned, during Computex 2021, Realtek officially announced the launch of its own wireless adapters (pictured below is an 802.11a / b / g with CardBus interface and same adapter but with USB interface). Digitimes has published an interview with Thomas Chou, manager of Realtek, which contains some interesting points. First, Mr. Chu said that despite a severe start delay, Realtek hopes to take the lead next year and be among the top three suppliers of WLAN adapters. Secondly, several considerations were made about the future of Wi-Fi technologies in the face of competitors such as UWB (Ultra-WideBand, by the way, Realtek plans to launch its UWB solutions on the market next year) and WiMAX.

Citing the fact that the Wi-Fi Alliance has threatened to revoke licenses to companies that issue 802.11n-compatible “products, Mr. Chu said that Realtek has no plans to develop such devices yet. Note that we are talking about solutions built on different 802.11n, none of which have been standardized yet. IEEE scheduled discussion on 802.11n for the second half of 2021, 802 draft specs.11n will be ready only towards the end of 2021.

Interestingly, according to Mr. Chu, 802.11n will not be a direct competitor to UWB technologies due to the likelihood of equipping laptops with both UWB and WLAN adapters in the near future. At the same time, the power consumption of devices plays an important role – modern 802.11a / b / g solutions consume approximately 2W, consumed by 802.11n adapters, the power will be 3-4 W with a bandwidth of 130-140 Mbit / s with a channel width of 20 MHz. The declared power consumption of UWB chips is significantly less than 1 W with a bandwidth of up to 480 Mbps (in the MBOA version at a distance of up to 3 m). Therefore, it is logical to assume that no other technology can fill the niche of 100 Mbit / s at a distance of up to 100 m better than 802.11n.

The situation is more complicated with WiMAX (802.sixteen). This undoubtedly interesting technology is positioned as a wireless alternative to broadband communication lines. However, in those countries where ADSL modems are widespread, a reasonable question may arise about the appropriateness. And when integrated into laptops or other portable devices, manufacturers will also face an acute issue of power consumption.
