In the footsteps of IDF: Intel’s updated plans for the release of processors, chipsets and platforms
I think it will not be superfluous to summarize information about Intel’s plans regarding the release of new processors, chipsets and platforms, taking into account the recently held IDF forum.
Let’s start with desktop solutions. First, it became known that the dual-core processors with the code name Smithfield will be called “in the world” Pentium D (no more serious changes are expected).
Also shedding light on previously implicit plans for the release of Extreme Edition processors. Smithfield will appear here too, with the slowest solution, so to speak, will have a clock frequency of 3.2 GHz and number 840. In general, the frequencies and line numbers of Pentium D and Pentium EE will be the same, only the latter will, among other things, support Hyper-Threading in the form of parallelism at the level of four execution threads (4-thread TLP). The price is still unknown, but we can already imagine how much such a high-end will cost.
Please also note that Intel intends to bring dual-core solutions to the mid-range segment as well.
Desktop processor roadmap
Now let’s take a look at the evolution diagram of Intel processors. Speaking of the 65nm generation of solutions, we can confidently expect single-core CedarMill and dual-core Presler and Dempsey – all in the first half of 2021. And a year later, processors based on the Merom core should arrive in time, which was originally intended for mobile PCs, but, as you can see, will serve as the basis for desktop systems as well.
As for the server market, plans for the release of dual-core Paxville (90nm process technology) have been confirmed. These solutions look intermediate, since their release is largely due to the extended time frame for work on Smithfield solutions, which, I must say, will simply contain two cores on one die. In the future, Paxville processors will be replaced by Tulsa solutions, already made according to the 65nm process technology.
Looking even further into the future, we see that the multi-core Whitefield will continue the evolution of the IA-32 segment in the year 2021. There is information that Whitefield processors will be based on Merom cores.
Moving on to IA-64 servers. For them, the Tukwila multi-core processor with a new architecture remains confirmed, which will be released at the end of 2021. (If you remember, Tukwila’s release plans were frozen at one time, but now it’s okay). In addition, we can already expect the heirs of Tukwila, namely Poulson, which will be executed according to the 45nm process technology.

Finally, let’s touch on the company’s platforms. Intel executives are convinced that it is much more convenient for end users to keep track of the release of platforms, rather than the individual processors and chipsets that make up these platforms. But, as we know, there is always a certain period of time between the announcements of such components, so the platform, as a whole, will be considered released only after the release of its last missing component (which, in general, is logical).
For example, the diagram shows that Presler / Cedarmill are expected in the first quarter of 2021., and the Broadwater chipset – only in the second quarter of the same year. Consequently, the Averill and Bridge Creek platforms will also only be seen in the second quarter of 2021.
