AMD Demonstrates Dual Core Athlon 64

AMD Decides to Reaffirm Its Technology Leadership in Dual-Core Design. Like last fall, the company held a press conference on the day of the Intel Developers Forum (IDF), however, if at the beginning of the fall IDF a dual-core Opteron was shown, now it is a dual-core Athlon 64. For the sake of fairness, we note that a press release regarding the development of a dual-core Athlon 64 was posted on AMD’s website last week. The simplified block diagram of the new processor is almost identical to the block diagram of the dual-core Opteron:

In addition to the SRI (System Request Interface) interface shown in the figure, which processes data and instructions for two cores and is connected to the memory interface and the HyperTransport bus, an APIC (not shown in the figure) has been added to the circuit, which synchronizes and adjusts the signal level from two processor cores.

An engineering sample of a dual-core Athlon 64 is made in compliance with the 90nm technical process in the Socket 939 form factor. It is alleged that to install new processors in old boards with support for Socket 939, you just need to change the BIOS firmware.

Deliveries of dual-core Athlon 64 processors are scheduled for the second half of 2021, however, a number of software issues are still pending. For example, Pacifica technology, designed to provide compatibility with software for single-core processors, is under development, and it is not known when it will be completed.
