Intel develops a serial bus to connect processors and memory
Currently, the Intel server architecture loses to the AMD64 architecture due to the fact that the latter uses an integrated memory controller and a high-speed HyperTransport bus to connect processors and peripherals, but Intel intends to change this state of affairs.
Intel’s upcoming CSI serial bus should appear in future generations of Xeon and Itanium processors in 2021. It is not yet clear if this will be an open standard, it is still under development. For the first time, the CSI bus should be introduced in a future version of the Itanium multi-core processor, codenamed Tukwila, and further in the Xeon multi-core processor, codenamed Whitefield. CSI will operate at the frequency of the processor’s cache to minimize delays in accessing system memory and other processors, support up to 16 CPUs for building high-performance servers based on the x86-64 architecture. Also, the new bus will operate at reduced frequencies to communicate with the chipset. All this will entail a complete restructuring of the architecture of the Intel server platform.
By the end of this year, most of Intel’s processors will be designed specifically for 64-bit computing; to date, 2.5 million such processors have already been sold, which, together with ongoing software adaptation, should make the 64-bit platform an industry standard within the next year.
Another priority area for Intel server platform development is focusing on high-performance Itanium for hi-end servers. By the end of the decade, the company intends to present in this family a chip containing 4 cores, each of which will simultaneously be able to perform 8 independent computation threads, for a total of 32 threads, compared to the same number for the Niagara processor developed by Sun.
Thus, over the next few years, Intel intends to expand its server solutions in every possible way to dominate all sectors of the market.
