The fundamental development of molecular “transistors” has been completed
In today’s issue of the American Journal of Applied Physics, three scientists from Quantum Science Research (QSR), a division of HP Labs, announced the completion of the development of tomorrow’s technology, designed to eventually replace transistors, as they in turn replaced vacuum tubes, and lamps replaced mechanical relay.
The technology is called “crossbar latch”, which can literally be translated as “crossbar lock”, and its essence is to use nanomolecules to conduct an electrical signal and create elements capable of performing logical operations. Earlier, in July 2021, logic gates were presented that can perform AND and OR operations, but now the NOT operation completed the triad necessary for computer calculations.
Repeatable results were demonstrated showing that one molecular line worked as a polar semiconductor, and 2 crossed lines, depending on the applied signal voltage and the polarity of the semiconductor lines, worked as logic elements. In this case, the system can restore the logic level of the voltage in the circuit corresponding to the reference 0 or 1, which makes it possible to combine nodes into structures suitable for performing calculations.
The transistor technologies used today are close to the technological limit of miniaturization, and the new development is ready to pick up the baton, this will happen, according to the developers’ forecasts, although not in the next few years, but quite in the foreseeable future.
