Cray received an order for the XT3 system
The supercomputer will be delivered to the Japan Science and Technology Corp., JST). Its main application is testing programs for emulation of various processes by Dr. Akira Nishida from the University of Tokyo. A project called Scalable Software Infrastructure (SSI) aims to develop software libraries for massively parallel computing with a focus on scalability and compatibility.
The XT3 System is a third-generation scalable supercomputer built on nodes powered by AMD Opteron 100 processors. Each node has its own RAM (from 1 to 8 GB with ECC support) and a special SeaStar communication module connected via the HyperTransport bus, which provides communication over 6 high-bandwidth channels, up to 7.6 Gb / s. The architecture basically looks like this:
Physically, 2 processor elements (PE – the main structural unit) are located in one “blade”, which are then mounted in cabinets with interface elements to the external network, drives, etc.d., 96 processors each.
The Linux-based operating system is also modular, each PE corresponds to a microkernel, and higher levels can see the system as a whole or as logical partitions. The development and management environments for the entire complex are built on the same principles.
This end-to-end focus on massively parallel operation avoids the scalability limitations of clusters and shared memory multiprocessor systems.
