golf balls, others are already using the same nanotubes in microelectronics.
Scientists from Infineon’s Munich Laboratories
Technologies AG have achieved significant success: yesterday
the world’s smallest transistor with a channel length of only 18 nm, which is almost
four times less than existing transistors. To create such a miniature
(if this word fits here) of the device, the researchers grew carbon nanotubes
diameter from 0.7 to 1.1 nm, strictly controlling this process. If, as usual,
take human hair for comparison, then it will be 100,000 times thicker.
The amazing properties of nanotubes make them the ideal material for
microelectronics. The transfer of electric current through them is carried out
practically no losses on the surface, in addition, nanotubes
can exhibit both the properties of a metal and a semiconductor.
The created nanotransistor is capable of passing a current of more than 15 μA, at
applied voltage of only 0.4 V (in conventional transistors ? 0.7 V). Observed
the current density was several tens of times higher than that of silicon transistors.
Infineon has no doubt that it will be able to further reduce the size of the
transistors if nanotubes are used as a material.
