Epson: the world’s first flexible 8-bit asynchronous microprocessor

Seiko Epson Corporation announced the development of the world’s first flexible
8-bit microprocessor using low temperature polysilicon
thin film transistors on a plastic substrate. It is reported that
energy consumption compared to currently used synchronous
microprocessors reduced by 70%, and the level of electromagnetic radiation
– by 20 dB. At the moment, the company is looking for a potential
application of invention. The results of this development were announced at
the ISSCC conference earlier this month in San Francisco.

Combination of original technologies SUFTLA, LTPS-TFT and technology
asynchronous circuits made it possible to create displays of large
sizes that are both flexible and different in shape
backing. SUFTLA is a proprietary Epson product that
makes it possible to transfer LTPS-TFT to flexible substrates. Expected,
that the new microprocessor will find wide application in mobile
devices.

Characteristics:

  • Chip size: 32 thousand. LTPS-TFT transistors
  • Gate width: 4 nm
  • Compatibility: original S1C88 8-bit microcomputer series
  • Dimensions: 27 x 24mm
  • Thickness: 200 nm
  • Weight: 200mg
  • Working voltage range: 3.5-7V
  • Maximum frequency: 5V, 500KHz
  • Consumption current: 180 μA (at 5V, 500 kHz)
