Philips plastic memory is the best choice for flexible substrates
According to a source with reference to Philips, researchers from the Dutch University of Groningen (University of Groningen) have developed a non-volatile memory in which plastic is used as a working medium. Scientists will publish details of their research in the March issue of Nature.
To store information, Philips uses organic field-effect transistors, the gate insulator of which consists of a polymer ferroelectric (or, as they say, ferroelectric) material. Depending on the state of the ferroelectric, the threshold voltage of the transistor will correspond to the state of the logical “0” or “1”. A similar effect is already used by companies leading the development in the field of FeRAM (ferroelectric random access memory) and the first prototypes of microcircuits have already been presented, however, given that the Norwegian Opticom, which developed plastic chips together with Intel, was recently forced to curtail research, it turns out that plastic microcircuits memory presented to the public for the first time.
However, the implementation of Philips plastic memory technologies into real microcircuits is also out of the question. Now the company is working with low-temperature technologies, which allow working with both semiconductors and plastics. Philips believes that plastic memory can be very useful for application to flexible polymer substrates.
