K8N4-E and A8N-E motherboards: nForce4-4x + Socket 754 and nForce4 Ultra + Socket 939 from ASUSTeK

The combination of the NVIDIA nForce4 chipset and the budget Socket 754 can no longer be called exotic. The ASUS K8N4-E motherboard, first demonstrated at the last CES 2021 in early January, like the K8N Neo3 from Micro-Star, is based on nForce4-4x – a somewhat “slowed down” version of nForce4 and, accordingly, cheaper. There is a Deluxe version: the K8N4-E Deluxe promises to be one of the most functional motherboards for use with 754-pin mPGA Athlon 64 / Sempron processors, the last days of which are numbered.

ASUS K8N4-E Deluxe

Brief characteristics of the board:

  • processor: AMD Athlon 64 / Sempron for Socket 754
  • memory: 400/333/266 non-ECC DDR, 3 slots (maximum 3 GB)
  • chipset: NVIDIA nForce4-4x, 800 MHz HyperTransport bus
  • expansion slots: PCI Express x16, 3 PCI Express x1, 3 PCI
  • drives: 8 Serial ATA RAID (0/1/0 + 1/5/10 / JBOD), 2 Ultra ATA 133/100/66/33
  • sound: 8-channel codec Realtek ALC850, S / PDIF output
  • network: Gigabit LAN Marvel 88E1111 PHY
  • other: 2 IEEE-1394, 10 USB 2.0

Additional 4 SATA ports and the corresponding capabilities for creating RAID arrays are implemented due to Silicon Image SiI3114CT176, which is connected via the PCI bus. K8N4-E Deluxe is already on offer in Japanese on-line stores, the price is about $ 160.

ASUS A8N-E

If the problem with the availability of motherboards from ASUSTeK based on the top nForce4 SLI is formally absent, then until recently almost nothing was known about products based on the main-stream nForce4 Ultra chipsets. The base A8N-E, which will serve as the basis for the entire series of motherboards based on nForce4 Ultra (separate footprints for additional controllers are a confirmation of this), has a modest but sufficient set of features that are revealed due to the chipset.

All transistors of the power subsystem of the processor are covered with an aluminum heatsink. On the rear panel, in addition to the optical digital audio output, there is a digital, coaxial. Among the expansion slots, you can find an unusual PCI Express connector of the x4 form factor, however, not 4, but 2 PCI-E lines are connected to it:

It has an unusual shape: it is “cut off” from one edge and allows you to insert cards much larger than itself. There is a latch on the back for such cards, almost like on a full-size PCI-E x16. Perhaps this will allow you to work with two video cards at once, for example, in modes that allow you to display an image on four monitors.

Will this allow graphics accelerators to work in SLI mode (“PCI-E x16 + PCI-E x2” mode, “real” “PCI-E x8 + PCI-E x8” requires at least a switch bar)? This option is also possible, because, for example, DFI and MSI have long been waging a “hidden battle” with NVIDIA for the possibility of using a simple nForce4 Ultra to build SLI systems. Are the reasons for the delays in deliveries of motherboards based on nForce4 Ultra from ASUSTeK due to the fact that the company took a wait-and-see attitude, observing how successful others’ attempts will be to bring the idea of cheap SLI to life??
