Hospital of the future: digital communications – everything for comfort

For the faint of heart and exhausted by frequent contacts with domestic medical institutions, I recommend reading with caution ..

Banner Estrella Medical Center, a large company specializing in hospital management in the Northwestern states, deployed Skylight System’s GetWellTV multimedia hospital-wide hospital at the opening of a new hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

The system converts an individual TV near each patient location into a multimedia center. From the “simple” applications, one can immediately note the delivery of any television channels, including cable and satellite, the provision of high-speed Internet and e-mail connections, as well as on-demand delivery services for video files, music and video games. The hospital administration notes that this already means a lot in a high-quality, home-oriented environment in the patient’s ward. A comfortable psychological climate is designed to minimize stress from changing the usual environment and accelerate recovery.

However, these are far from all the functions of the system. Specific services include the following:

  • delivery upon request of educational videos on a specific disease for the patient or his relatives
  • interactive menu creation based on the diet chosen by the doctor and the patient’s personal preferences
  • contacting various support services to call service personnel like in hotels
  • and, of course, communication with the attending physician and staff on duty.

Such a “digital ward”, according to doctors and technical specialists implementing it, should be the first step into the future of personalized medicine.
