Intel to Showcase New Server Technologies at IDF
Intel will kick off the next IDF Annual Cycle with a workshop in San Francisco on March 1-3 this year, and some details about the technologies that will be showcased have been leaked to the press.
As part of the company’s new strategy to promote complex solutions (“platforms”), representatives of the corporation have repeatedly noted that the focus of its activities is shifting from individual processors to chipsets developed for joint functioning as part of ready-made solutions. I mean, first of all, chipsets and network solutions, but we still hear cautious voices that in full all the advantages of the platforms will appear only in motherboards and even ready-made systems from Intel. So far, we see the successful march of the Centrino platform in the laptop market, but we must not forget that the company has been offering complex solutions for the server and corporate PC market for quite some time. At the moment, these are complete validated kits for assembly by authorized partners of ready-made solutions, which the company does not offer yet. However, servers made from Intel components are quite popular, including in Russia, because of their good price-quality ratio.
They have fairly convenient network monitoring tools, and in the next generation of desktop chipsets it is planned to introduce a separate south bridge for the corporate segment of the market, which will also have monitoring and control tools at the stage before the operating system is loaded. Perhaps these tools will only be available on motherboards made by Intel itself.
For servers based on Xeon processors, Intel will introduce a new technology called I / O Acceleration Technology to accelerate I / O. It will accelerate the work of the TCP / IP protocol, but it will be based entirely on hardware innovations. The processor will have a built-in TCP / IP protocol stack processing unit, the chipset will be optimized for transferring large data streams, and the company’s network controllers will be optimized for parallel processing of requests and improved direct memory access. All of these components have been tested for high-performance collaboration and, according to company representatives, can accelerate data transfer in networks by up to 30% and eliminate existing network bottlenecks in 90% of existing applications. Intel also plans to introduce new dual-core 65nm processors and a new technology for them called Star, which includes multithreading, CPU virtualization and operation in 32 and 64 bit modes. The availability of these solutions for sale is planned for the summer.
Also, a new roadmap of the company is being prepared until 2021, in which processors with “many, many” cores will appear.
