The first video cards from ATI with 512 MB of memory: Radeon X850 XT PE and … Radeon X950 XT?
At the Texas Gaming Festival (TXGF), which started today in. Dallas and will last for three more days, the Canadian company ATI Technologies is going to showcase its first graphics accelerators designed for high-end gaming systems and equipped with 512 MB of local video memory.
The same solutions will soon appear in the camp of the Californian manufacturer, for example, Gainward based on NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra chips will release products with 512 MB 1.6 ns GDDR3 memory supporting SLI technology. Thus, with the simultaneous use of two similar video cards in SLI mode, the total amount of available graphics memory in the system will reach an impressive 1 GB. The only question is how the additional 256 MB of memory on each card will affect the final price and the final performance of the products in general.
Coming back to our cards: photos of Radeon X850 XT PE equipped with 512 MB of memory appeared on the web-resource with the self-explanatory name “Elite Bastards”:
The updated model, just like the usual Radeon X850 XT PE 256 MB, has 2 DVI-I outputs, VIVO function, “two-level” cooling system, PCI Express interface, and a 6-pin socket for additional power. The “heroes of the occasion” themselves – memory chips – are slightly covered with an aluminum plate of a composite radiator:
As you can see, there are twice as many of them on the front side – 8 pcs. How many of them are there in total, or what capacity they are can be determined from the following photo, the imperfection of the cooling system allows you to do this:
So, the GDDR3 memory chips from Samsung Electronics are used the same as in the Radeon X850 XT PE 256 MB – their density is 256 Mbit (“55” on the bottom line of the marking), which means the total number is 16 pieces. (8 more on the reverse side), however, the operating frequency, as well as the access time, remained unknown. It will probably still take some time before manufacturers start using 512 Mbit Samsung chips, soldering only 8 memory chips on the board to reach the 512 MB level – after all, the first models of the Radeon 9800 class with 256 MB of memory did not immediately switch to high-density chips.
Perhaps the varieties of video cards based on the 130 nm R480 video core with 512 MB of memory will very soon replace new solutions based on the next generation R520 90 nm chip, which will be demonstrated at the beginning of March at CeBIT, and which are supposed to have 512 MB of memory initially.
Meanwhile, the Chinese comrades managed to publish interesting information on the UNIKA website, from which it follows that they got a sample of some revolutionary new video card and even carried out some testing. Here is the data on its properties provided by 3DMark05:
Radeon X950 XT 512 MB?
That is, before us is nothing more than a video card on the R520 with the notorious 512 MB of memory, or its collective image, long voiced on many forums. You can discuss how these data do not contradict common sense here.
