Personal Amplifier 2021 and CARDamp MK-II ? compact ULF for PC

Personal computer, which more and more claims to be an entertainment
center, it is no longer possible to call the language only “an electronic computer”.
Component manufacturers are increasingly interested in the development of multimedia
PC component. For example, the newly formed German company PREL
announced its presence in the market by introducing a low (sound) amplifier
frequency “Personal Amplifier 2021”, intended for installation directly
to the system unit.

The ULF itself is small in size, covered with a heat sink, located in the center of the board. An expansion card installed in a PCI slot is shielded; the connectors on it are as follows: one 3.5 mm mini-jack (line stereo input) and two pairs of outputs for speaker systems of an unidentified standard. The manufacturer offers to connect speakers (passive, of course) to strip the insulation on the cables by 7 mm and insert them directly into the jacks ? there they are fixed with a latch. On the one hand, this has its own plus ? there is no need to look for a non-standard plug, on the other ? at least you can confuse the phasing of the speakers, and as a maximum ? burn the amplifier and the power supply together with it if a short circuit occurs. By the way, about the PSU: considering that the device is powered by the PCI bus, it should have a certain power reserve.

The amplifier is capable of the following:

  • output power ? up to 7W (PMPO) per channel when driven into 4 ohm load
  • frequency range ? 12 Hz-40 kHz in level ?3dB
  • harmonic distortion ? 0.055% (frequency 1 kHz, power 1 W, load ? 8 Ohm)
  • channel separation ? 50 dBA

Of course, one should not expect phenomenal sound quality from such a solution,
but, having paid approximately 39 euros, in the presence of a pair of passive speakers (preferably
with high sensitivity), taking into account the German quality, you can
no doubt that against the background of active “brothers” such a set will look
more than worthy.

PREL cannot be called a pioneer in the field of “amplification” for PCs
? 3 years ago Ego Systems or ESI (more precisely, its subdivision ? Audiotrack)
presented its first CARDamp, and at the end of this summer in Japanese
the company’s mirror has a press release announcing the release of CARDamp MK-II.
Only now the first copies of amplifiers have become available at retail at a price
141 dollar.

Let’s take a closer look at it:

  • Volume control (from ALPS)
  • Headphone output (3.5 mm mini-jack)
  • Line-in (3.5mm mini-jack)
  • Speaker outputs (2 x 6 mm jack)
  • Connector for external power supply (+15 V, 1-2 A)
  • Internal 9-pin header to connect to the motherboard
  • LED indicator (mains / overload)
  • Seats for a pair of replaceable operational amplifiers (!) (8 legs,
    DIP type, 5 V supply ? 9V; possible options: TI / JRC / PHILIPS NE5532, Analog
    Device AD712, AD823, AD827, OP275, TI (BB) OPA2134, OPA2604) Used
    in PU block.
  • +12 V socket for connecting to a power supply unit
  • Jumper: Input Level 0dB / + 3dB
  • IC TA2021 from Tripath Technology
    (1-bit digital amplifier t.n. “Class
    T ”, 2 x 25 W @ 4 Ohm) with heat sink
  • Sleep Mode ON / OFF jumper

The following features should be noted right away: volume control and replaceable operating
amplifiers;. 25W per channel is equally impressive. The secret to high power output
lies in the TA2021 chip,
which here acts as a UM. Developers from Tripath “invented” a new
gain class that is a combination of traditional analog and digital
technologies. On the official web-resource of the company it is reported that the efficiency of the amplifier
about 90%, like most amplifiers operating in class D, but at the expense of
the use of special algorithms, this development is not characterized by specific
for class D distortion:

However, on the ESI website, everything is presented in a slightly different way:

That is, the diagram is typical for a class D amplifier. But in any case, class T uses the principle of converting the original analog signal into a pulse-width modulated signal (even if the modulating frequency is higher than the standard 100-200 KHz, and not constant), followed by its amplification and conversion back to an analog signal. If we take into account that the source will mainly be a sound card, which has already transformed digital data into an analog signal by means of a DAC, then a natural question arises, what prevents from converting the original audio data with PCM (pulse code modulation) into PWM (pulse width modulation) still in digital?

However, the characteristics of the CARDamp MK-II are as follows:

  • output power ? 25 watts per channel when driven into 4 ohms
    • – 250 mW with headphones (16 ohms)
  • signal-to-noise ratio ? 100 dB (a-weighted, PU)
  • slew rate ? 8 V / μs (PU)
  • common mode rejection ratio ? 100 dB at 1 kHz (PU)
  • frequency range ? 20Hz-20KHz
  • total harmonic distortion ? 0.05% (power 13 W, load 8 ohm)

Without a doubt, the final opinion about the reviewed products can be made only after direct acquaintance with them and unbiased testing.
