IMEC creates an international consortium for the development of immersion technologies

Belgian Research Center IMEC (Interuniversities Micro Electronics Center) announced the creation of a consortium of 30 companies to work on immersion technologies with 193nm light sources. This work will be carried out as part of the IMEC research program to investigate the possibility of using 193nm immersion lithographic tools to create elements smaller than 45nm. Earlier (in January), when the first mention of the IMEC project appeared in the press, it was already reported about the intention to introduce 193-nm immersion technologies in the mass production of semiconductor microcircuits in compliance with the 65-nm process.

The consortium includes such chip manufacturers as Intel, Samsung, Texas Instruments, Philips, Infineon, STMicroelectronics and Matsushita, as well as NEC Electronics and Sony; and lithographic equipment suppliers such as ASML, Carl Zeiss, Cymer, Donaldson Extraction Systems, KLA-Tencor, Lam Research and Tokyo Electron. Suppliers of photoresist and anti-reflective materials Arch, AZ, JSR, Shin-Etsu, TOK, Brewer Science and Nissan Chemicals, manufacturers of photo masks Dai Nippon Screen, Toppan Printing and Photronics also found their place in the consortium.

I cannot refrain from saying that IMEC is an example of the positive effect of economic globalization. However, how much IMEC will be more successful than separate European developments (MoreMoore, NanoCMOS and NaPa), time will tell.
