Hitachi unveils first Itanium chipset with 667 MHz FSB at IDF

Hitachi showcases the industry’s first next-generation Itanium chipset, codenamed Montecito, with 667MHz FSB, and a prototype of its own BladeSymphony at IDF this year. The new chipset was developed in close cooperation with Intel, and in addition to the increased bus frequency, it supports the proprietary platform virtualization technology at the hardware level.

According to the manufacturer, increasing the bus frequency gives a performance gain in the SPECCPU2000 test up to 15% and in streaming data reading from memory up to 40% compared to the FSB frequency of 400 MHz.

Intel Virtualization Technology is supported by Hitachi’s bulk in the development of virtualization systems for mainframes and allows the creation of multiple logical servers (“partitions”) based on a single hardware platform, which should help in resource allocation and management of the computing structure of the enterprise. No third-party software is required to implement this technology.

The new chipset and solutions based on it are positioned in the infrastructure of large enterprises, for scientific calculations and work with large databases.
