AMD Increases Market Share, But Intel Keeps On
Continuing the summarizing of the fourth quarter, which we began yesterday with a discussion of the results of sales of semiconductor chips in general and graphics adapters in particular, it is also worth taking a look at the data on sales of processors. According to Mercury Research, both Intel and AMD increased their market share, displacing even more VIA and Transmeta, which controlled less than 2% of the market.
So, Intel’s market share in the fourth quarter of last year was 82.2% (up 0.2%), and AMD’s 16.6% (up 0.6%). According to data from Mercury Research for the past eight quarters, a market share of 16.6% is a kind of a record for AMD – for example, at the end of last year, Intel had a market share of 83.7%, and AMD – 14.7%.
Analysts point out that AMD has all the prerequisites for further growth in sales – in technical terms, the company is not inferior to its competitor, except that there is a slight lag in the field of mobile solutions, which, however, is gradually coming to naught, and a fairly aggressive pricing policy should, according to idea to stimulate high demand. However, the fourth quarter was very difficult for AMD, so compared to last year, the change in market share was only 1.9%.
The largest increase in sales came from the budget AMD Sempron processors, which generate much less profit than the Athlon processors. It is noted, however, that the demand for AMD server processors in the fourth quarter increased significantly. However, Intel also sells server processors well, and its laptop processors were out of competition last quarter. It’s a pity that Mercury analyzes data only for x86-compatible processors – it would be interesting to see how AMD and Intel server processors compete with solutions from Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Sun.
