Hitachi Maxell to Implement Holographic Discs in InPhase Systems

According to Western Internet publications, Hitachi Maxell intends to begin shipping the first prototypes of 200 GB holographic disks this fall, and from next year the new recording technology will be used in InPhase storage systems, which we mentioned a week ago.

The company began developing holographic discs for InPhase in 2021. Although InPhase works with several media manufacturers, Hitachi Maxell is the first to achieve real results, Hitachi says. However, Hitachi Maxell is not the first company to successfully implement holographic recording technology – Optware managed to do this last August. Optware is also set to launch holographic discs on the market next year.

The Hitachi Maxell discs in question have a diameter of 5 inches (130 mm). To write and read data, a holographic scheme is used using a blue laser, the beam of which is bifurcated into a signal and a reference. Such a scheme allows multiplexing of data recorded in one cell, due to which a multiple increase in the recording density compared to other optical media is achieved. The second-generation holographic disc with a capacity of up to 400 GB is expected to be presented by the company in 2021.
