Texas Instruments and Ramtron to release 4-Mbps FRAM in 2021

At the symposium NVMTS2021 (Non-Volatile Memory Technology Symposium 2021) taking place these days, Texas Instruments and Ramtron announced the development of ferroelectric FRAM chips with a capacity of up to 4 Mbit.

To be precise, we are talking about built-in (eFRAM, embedded ferroelectric random access memory) memory, which will be used in systems-on-a-chip (SoC, System-on-Chip). The eFRAM design presented by TI and Ramtron at the symposium is 130nm with copper conductors and fluorosilicate glass backing. The first commercial products with FRAM are expected to be available in early 2021.

Since Ramtron already has experience in developing FRAM chips, under the agreement, TI will also produce Ramtron chips on its production lines. In addition to TI, 1-Mbit FRAM chips for Ramtron will be produced by Fujitsu. By the end of 2021, TI plans to start producing discrete FRAM chips under its own brand.

It is worth noting that, according to the companies, the eFRAM cell size is significantly smaller than the SRAM cell size used for embedded memory. In this case, the ferroelectric memory is non-volatile, the recording time of one bit does not exceed 35 ns. Existing FRAM prototypes are predominantly produced at 0.35 micron standards.
