PowerEdge 1855 marks Dell’s big move into the blade server market
Dell recently announced a new
blade server, PowerEdge 1855. This is the second attempt in the history of the company to enter
this market, and her intentions are serious. IBM and HP are traditionally strong there, and
Dell currently only occupies 4 percent of it, but now intends to fight
for its share with the help of primarily an aggressive pricing policy.
First, let’s compare the new server with its predecessor, here are their key characteristics:
Up to 2 Pentium III up to 1.4 GHz
Up to 2 Xeon up to 3.6 GHZ
Up to 2 GB ECC SDRAM
Up to 8 GB ECC DDR-2 SDRAM
Up to 146 GB
Up to 292 GB
3U, up to 6 “blades” 7U, up to 10 “blades” 42U total rack
Up to 82 “blades” Up to 60 “blades”
As you can see, the difference in technical characteristics in 2 generations. IN
addition to this, if the previous generation was 20% more expensive than the same
configurations in a standard 1U form factor, the price of the current generation of “blades”expected to be 20-30% less than the corresponding “most popular” 1U server.
The prices announced are as follows: one “blade” $ 1,699, 7U housing with five “blades”$ 11 494, and with ten $ 19 989 in base configuration.
The chassis weighs, depending on the configuration, from 40 to 125 kg and in addition to 10 “blades”contains
one. 1200 watt power supplies with optional hot-standby support
and maximum output power up to 4170 watts
2. built-in KVM (which is absolutely necessary here), supporting both analog
switching and signal transmission in IP networks.
3. DRAC / MC – 9 pin connector for serial or network remote administration.
one. 10/100/1000 BaseT Layer 2 Network Hub.
2. Pass-Through network module with ten 1000BaseT links.
3. Pass-Through FC module with ten 2Gb / s links.
All nodes support hot plugging and remote administration.
Blade servers are designed primarily for companies that have to save money
place in server rooms, initially they were positioned for the market of web applications,
and now they are also used in large corporations and in the construction of clusters.
IDC predicts this market will expand from the current $ 1.3 billion this year
up to $ 7.2 by 2021. Dell announces importance to itself with the release of a new solution
of this direction and intends to return the lost due to insufficient
