TV-cards with two tuners – exotic or trend?
The Japanese company NOVAC recently updated its line of internal TV tuners for PCs and, among others, presented an unusual model called “Dual-TV” (NV-TV300D). This time, the “bifurcation syndrome” did not bypass such seemingly conservative products in terms of innovation.
The board, with dimensions slightly exceeding the standard (its length is 160 mm), managed to accommodate two compact HF modules LG Innotek TALN-H202T. Each is powered by its own Philips SAA7133HL 9-bit ADC. They communicate with the PCI bus, it seems, through the PCI-to-PCI bridge PCI 6140 from PLX Technology. It is worth noting here that unlike the SAA7134HL, which is the best suited for Russian television broadcasting standards, the SAA7133HL does not “understand” A2 and NICAM and is designed for terrestrial networks broadcasting sound in BTSC, SAP or EIAJ format. But even if we close our eyes to this fact, the NV-TV300D will not be able to work correctly in our conditions: the selectors are still capable of processing only an NTSC signal.
If we abstract from such gloomy details, then what does a happy (Japanese) buyer of this product get in the end?? A unique opportunity to work with two independent video streams simultaneously, without resorting to additional tricks. That is, finally, the user is offered an honest implementation of the PIP (picture-in-picture) function and its variations, and also eliminates the need to watch what you are recording at the moment: now you can switch channels without fear of spoiling anything. Similar considerations are valid for external sources – there are two video inputs (S-Video, RCA adapters included) on the board, the possibility of combined use of this entire economy is not excluded. But you shouldn’t delude yourself: the manufacturer specifically notes that simultaneous recording from two sources is impossible.
In the Land of the Rising Sun, the first sales of NOVAC Dual-TV will begin on December 25
2021 at about $ 120. Not to end up being so pessimistic
Note and in fairness, it is worth noting that in European on-line stores
already offer a similar product, but in a higher class – WinTV-PVR-500MCE, manufactured
Interestingly, the radio blocks are now located across the board. Besides the antenna input
there is also an input for TV for an FM antenna. But, most importantly: in contrast
from the NOVAC product, this “combine” has the ability to hardware coding
to MPEG1 / 2, moreover, from two sources at once! A pair of CX23416-12 chips is responsible for this
from Conexant and a couple of buffers, which are production memory chips
Samsung. Analog-to-digital conversion is carried out, respectively, by two devices
from the same Conexant, and an old acquaintance commutes the whole thing – PCI-to-PCI
PCI 6140 bridge. For audio needs, the developers of WinTV-PVR-500MCE have allocated a couple of full-fledged
RCA connectors, abandoning the “toy” mini-jack.
As the name implies, the tuner is designed to work primarily in operating systems of the Windows XP Media Center Edition family, which have enhanced multimedia capabilities compared to conventional versions. For example, these operating systems do not require additional software for viewing and recording TV programs on TV cards, support for the remote control is included from the very beginning. Moreover, support for up to 3 TV tuners in one system is declared, so it will not be difficult to recognize a “two-headed” card for Windows XP MCE:

The best part is that the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-500MCE can be supplied with both NTSC and PAL RF modules (multistandard PAL I, PAL B / G, Secam), which makes it a very attractive product for us.
